JURE SIG 18 pre-conference 2014

The 2nd JURE SIG Educational Effectiveness pre-conference will take place just before the Fourth Meeting of the EARLI SIG Educational Effectiveness conference at the University of Southampton. The aim of the pre-conference is to allow graduate students and young researchers that share a common interest in educational effectiveness, to come together in an informal environment, get to know each other’s work and benefit from the talks and workshops that will take place during the event.

The two-day pre-conference commences on Tuesday, 26th August 2014 early afternoon and ends on Wednesday, 27th August 2014. On the first day, the pre-conference hosts a keynote speech on “Multilevel Modelling of School Performance Data” given by George Leckie from the Centre for Multilevel Modelling at the University of Bristol. This is followed by a panel discussion in which participants are given the opportunity to interact with established academics within the field of educational effectiveness that are also members of editorial boards: Prof. Daniel Muijs (University of Southampton), Prof. Bert Creemers (University of Groningen), Prof. Samuel Stringfield (University of Cincinnati) and Prof. David Reynolds (University of Southampton). They are joining us in a discussion of the overall theme: “Tips and Tricks to publish easily: journal editors sharing their personal experiences with young Educational Effectiveness researchers”. The day culminates with a complimentary dinner at a local traditional English pub - participation to the dinner is optional.

On the second day, three workshops will take place in parallel and the participants have to choose one of the following:

- Option 1: ‘’Analyzing international large-scale assessment data with R (including brief Introduction to R)’’ by Daniel Caro (Research Fellow, Oxford University Centre for Educational Assessment) and Christian Bokhove (Lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of Southampton)
 - Option 2: ‘’Rasch Modelling and applications in educational effectiveness research’’ by Maria Pampaka (Research Fellow/Lecturer at the University of Manchester)
- Option 3:  “An introduction to SEM models” by Charalambos Charalambous (Lecturer at the University of Cyprus)
